About the Pufferfish
Pufferfish are slow, ungainly swimmers that make up for their lack of speed with one of the animal kingdom's most extreme defense systems: the ability to gulp water and inflate into a spiky, nearly indigestible ball within seconds. Many species also carry tetrodotoxin, a neurotoxin far more potent than cyanide, packed mainly in their skin, liver, and ovaries.

Are all pufferfish poisonous?+
Most, but not all, pufferfish species carry tetrodotoxin, concentrated mainly in the liver, skin, and reproductive organs. The toxin isn't produced by the fish itself but is thought to come from bacteria in its diet, and toxicity levels vary by species and region.
How does a pufferfish inflate?+
A pufferfish has an unusually elastic stomach and no ribs, allowing it to gulp large quantities of water (or air, if out of water) in seconds, ballooning into a spiky sphere that's difficult for most predators to bite or swallow.
Can you really eat pufferfish safely?+
Yes, when prepared correctly — in Japan, chefs must complete years of licensed training to legally serve fugu, carefully removing the toxic organs. Even so, improperly prepared pufferfish causes serious poisonings and occasional deaths every year.
What predators eat pufferfish?+
Few animals can safely eat a toxic, inflated pufferfish, but tiger sharks are a notable exception — they appear to be immune or highly resistant to tetrodotoxin and prey on pufferfish regularly.
Are pufferfish endangered?+
Most pufferfish species, including the tiger pufferfish, are classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, though some reef-dependent species face localized pressure from habitat degradation and the aquarium trade.
