About the Manatee

Manatees — also called sea cows — are large, slow-moving marine herbivores that graze on seagrass in warm, shallow coastal waters. Despite their aquatic lifestyle, they are more closely related to elephants than to any whale, dolphin, or seal. Completely gentle and without natural predators, manatees' greatest threats are entirely human-made: boat propeller strikes are the leading cause of non-natural manatee death, and nearly every wild adult manatee carries permanent propeller scars on its back.

Manatee Fun Facts for Kids

  • 1Manatees are more closely related to elephants than to any whale or dolphin — they share a common evolutionary ancestor (superorder Afrotheria) from approximately 60 million years ago.
  • 2Almost every adult manatee in Florida carries propeller scars from motorboat strikes. Biologists use these unique scar patterns to identify and track individual animals.
  • 3Manatees are the only fully herbivorous large marine mammals — they eat exclusively aquatic plants, consuming up to 10% of their body weight in seagrass per day.
  • 4Manatees replace their teeth in a conveyor-belt pattern throughout life — new teeth form at the back of the jaw and slowly migrate forward as front teeth wear down from grinding tough vegetation.

Common Questions

Manatee Questions & Answers

Are manatees related to elephants?+

Yes — manatees and elephants share a common ancestor and are classified together in the superorder Afrotheria. Their relationship is visible in details like nails on their flippers (similar to elephant toenails) and similar tooth replacement patterns. Manatees are not related to whales, dolphins, or walruses, despite their aquatic lifestyle.

Are manatees endangered?+

The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Numbers declined severely in the 20th century due to hunting and habitat loss, partially recovering under legal protection. Red tide algal blooms — worsened by agricultural water pollution — have caused large mortality events in recent years, reversing some of that recovery.

What do manatees eat?+

Manatees are strict herbivores, eating seagrasses, algae, and freshwater aquatic plants depending on their habitat. A large adult can consume up to 50–60 kg (110–130 lb) of vegetation per day — roughly 10% of its body weight. They graze slowly along the bottom in shallow water, using their prehensile upper lip to grasp and pull plant material.

Why do manatees swim so slowly?+

Manatees typically cruise at 3–5 km/h (2–3 mph), though they can sprint briefly at up to 25 km/h (15 mph). Their slow pace reflects low metabolic rates and a body shape built for efficient grazing, not speed. Their need to surface every 3–5 minutes to breathe, combined with slow movement in the same shallow coastal areas used by recreational boats, makes them extremely vulnerable to strikes.

What is the biggest threat to manatees today?+

Boat strikes are the leading cause of non-natural manatee death. Because manatees surface frequently to breathe and move slowly through shallow coastal waterways, collisions are common. Nearly every adult wild manatee in Florida carries propeller scars. Additional threats include red tide poisoning, cold stress syndrome in winter, habitat loss from coastal development, and entanglement in fishing gear.
