Approximately 23,000–25,000 wild African lions remain, spread across fragmented populations in sub-Saharan Africa. The population has declined by roughly 43% over the past 21 years. A small, critically endangered population of about 700 Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) also survives in India's Gir Forest.

A lion's mane serves as both a signal of fitness and physical protection. Darker, fuller manes indicate higher testosterone levels and better health, making those males more attractive to females and more intimidating to rivals. The mane also cushions bites and claw strikes during fights with other males over pride control.

Lions are apex carnivores that primarily hunt medium-to-large herbivores: zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, and various antelope species. A pride can take down prey weighing over 500 kg, including young elephants, giraffes, and hippos. Lions are also opportunistic scavengers, stealing kills from hyenas, leopards, and cheetahs.

Lions can sprint at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) in short bursts, but they lack stamina and typically chase prey for less than 200 metres. Their hunting success rate is only 15–25% — which is why prides rely on coordinated group ambush strategies rather than speed alone.

African lions are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Their primary threats include human-wildlife conflict (retaliatory killing by livestock herders), habitat loss from agricultural expansion, prey depletion from bushmeat hunting, and trophy hunting. Some isolated populations qualify as Endangered or Critically Endangered at a regional level.
