Emperor penguins survive −60°C temperatures through dense, waterproof feathers (about 100 per square centimetre — the highest density of any bird), a thick layer of subdermal fat, counter-current blood circulation in their flippers and feet, and huddling behaviour that can raise interior temperatures to +37°C even when the outside is −40°C.

Emperor penguins hold the bird diving record at 565 metres (1,854 ft), though typical foraging dives are 100–300 metres. They can hold their breath for over 20 minutes. Adaptations include collapsible lungs, elevated myoglobin levels, and the ability to slow their heart rate to as low as 15 beats per minute during deep dives.

After the female lays her single egg, she has depleted her energy reserves and must immediately return to the sea (up to 100 km away) to feed. The male balances the egg on his feet, covered by a warm brood pouch of feathered skin, fasting for approximately 64 days until the egg hatches — by which time he may have lost 40% of his body weight.

Emperor penguins are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, but scientists warn they could become Vulnerable or Endangered within decades. Antarctic sea ice — essential for their breeding — is declining due to climate change. Models predict that over 80% of colonies could be quasi-extinct by 2100 if current warming trends continue.

Emperor penguin chicks hatch covered in grey down that provides some insulation but is not waterproof. They spend their first weeks sheltered on a parent's feet under the brood pouch. Both parents alternate feeding trips to the sea, regurgitating partially digested fish and krill. Chicks form 'crèches' (groups) for warmth while both parents are away foraging.
